Project Overview
Planned overhaul of an auxiliary diesel engine to correct unstable operation, restore compression performance and improve reliability of the vessel’s onboard power-generation system.
Operational Challenge
The auxiliary engine showed difficult starting, uneven exhaust temperatures and increased lubricating-oil consumption. Continued operation could have resulted in reduced generator reliability and an increased risk of failure during port or cargo operations.
Technical Assessment
Engine records, running hours and recent alarm history were reviewed. Compression condition, injector performance, valve clearances and cooling-water condition were evaluated. The inspection plan focused on cylinder heads, fuel injectors, pistons, liners, connecting-rod bearings and associated cooling and lubrication passages.

Execution Methodology

The engine was then pre-lubricated, barring checks were completed, and the unit was started under controlled conditions before gradual load application.
HSE Controls
The work area was isolated and kept free of ignition sources and oil contamination. Heavy components were handled using certified lifting arrangements. Fuel and lubrication systems were protected from foreign material throughout the overhaul.
Quality Assurance and Inspection
Critical clearances, tightening values and replaced parts were documented. During testing, exhaust temperatures, lubricating-oil pressure, cooling-water temperature, load sharing and abnormal noise were monitored.
