Project Overview

Emergency troubleshooting and overhaul of a main sea water pump while the vessel remained afloat, with the objective of restoring cooling-water circulation and avoiding an unplanned off-hire period.

Operational Challenge

The vessel reported abnormal vibration, reduced discharge pressure and leakage from the mechanical seal of the main sea water pump. Because the pump served critical cooling consumers, prolonged operation in this condition created a risk of overheating and interruption of vessel operations. The repair had to be completed onboard and within a restricted operational window.

Technical Assessment

The MGQ technical team attended the vessel, reviewed operating records and carried out visual, dimensional and mechanical checks. Initial inspection indicated bearing wear, seal deterioration and possible shaft misalignment. The pump was isolated in coordination with the vessel crew and a safe dismantling plan was agreed before work commenced.

Execution Methodology

The pump was dismantled in a controlled sequence and all components were tagged for traceability. The shaft and impeller were cleaned and inspected for scoring, corrosion and distortion. Bearings and sealing elements were renewed, mating faces were prepared, and the unit was reassembled with attention to shaft freedom and coupling alignment. After reinstatement, the system was gradually returned to service and monitored under operating load.

HSE Controls

Work was performed under vessel permit-to-work procedures, including machinery isolation, lockout/tagout, safe lifting, housekeeping and use of appropriate PPE. Open flanges and pipe connections were protected to prevent contamination and accidental ingress.

Quality Assurance and Inspection

Inspection findings, replaced components, alignment checks and final operating readings were recorded. The completed pump was accepted after stable discharge pressure, normal bearing temperature, no visible leakage and acceptable vibration were confirmed.

Project Outcome

Cooling-water circulation was restored within the available operational window. The vessel avoided an extended delay and the pump returned to stable service after completion of the overhaul and onboard performance test.
